What Is a Business Type (Authorized for Hire, Private, Exempt)?
A carrier's business type describes what it's allowed to haul and for whom, as declared in its FMCSA filing: Authorized for Hire (hauling other companies' freight for pay), Private Property (hauling its own goods only), or Exempt (hauling certain commodities exempt from for-hire authority rules).
A single carrier's filing can list more than one — a company might be both Private Property and Authorized for Hire, for instance. Authorized for Hire is generally the commercially relevant category for insurance agents, factoring companies, and dispatchers, since that's the group that actually needs MC operating authority and the services built around it.
